P25 Phase 1 & Phase 2 Trunking

Trunking systems use advanced algorithms to efficiently allocate available channels among a large number of users. Unlike conventional radio systems where fixed channels are assigned to users, trunking systems dynamically allocate channels based on call requests, optimizing channel usage and reducing waiting time by channel congestion.

P25 Phase 1 trunking uses the FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access) method in one 12.5 kHz physical channel.

P25 Phase 2 trunking uses the TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) method, to create two logical channels in one 12.5 kHz physical channel.

The P25 radio complies with DHS P25 CAP (TIA-102) Certification for multiple vendor interoperability.

Security

AES, DES and ARC4 Encryption

Depending on the required security grade, there are three encryption methods to choose from.

Multiple AES/DES keys (up to 64) and 32 Common Key Reference (CKR) can be loaded into a radio.

When using ARC4 encryption, 8 software encryption keys are available.

Encryptions Security  Level Required Unit License Key Handheld Mobile
AES Encryption (256-bit) Most Secure UT-134 or UT-125FIPS ISL-P25AES
DES Encryption (56-bit) Practically Secure UT-134 or UT-125FIPS -
ARC4 Encryption (40-bit) Simple implementation UT-134 or UT-125FIPS  ISL-P25AES/ARC4

FIPS 140-3 level 1

The UT-125FIPS will meet FIPS 140-3 level 1 security requirements for US federal agencies which uses cryptography.

  • Pending FIPS140-3 approval.

LLA (P25 Radio Authentication)

The LLA function (also known as P25 Radio Authentication) provides an authentication procedure to establish links between radio units and the system for Phase 1 and Phase 2 Trunking systems. Both Unit Authentication (infrastructure initiated) and Mutual Authentication (unit and infrastructure authenticate each other) methods supported.

OTAR (Over-the-Air Rekeying)

The OTAR function can send encryption key updates to radios over the air. The OTAR is supported for both conventional and trunking mode. P25 radio users do not have to bring back their radios for manual service. The OTAR function simplifies encryption key management and enhances system security.

Other Features

ASK (Advanced System Key) protection

  • Hardware-based ASK (Advanced System Key)  protects the radio from unauthorized programming. (for Trunked System)
  • Analog inversion voice scrambler (16-codes)

Operational Enhancement

OTAP (Over-The-Air-Programming)

The OTAP function can conveniently read and write the radio programming over the air using a P25 channel. It can remotely update the configuration on the P25 radio, minimizing the need to bring back the radios for wired updates.

Conventional Voting Scan

When used in a multi-site repeater system, the P25 radio scans repeater channels and automatically selects to the strongest repeater site. Stay connected for longer over wider areas.

Location Data Transmission

When the GPS feature is used, the P25 radio can automatically transmit location data at programmed intervals. The location data can be sent with voice call or status call to be used with a location system. The GPS log functions logs user position data in a microSD card memory.
