Emergency Communication Planning
by Kevin Macaraeg, Marketing Coordinator
In emergency planning, communication is one of the key elements to make sure operations go over smoothly. Land mobile radios are essential for ground communications. Marine radios are useful for scanning regular and emergency channels, pairing with radars, and more. Even some amateur bands have dedicated emergency channels. However, due to the nature of these protocols, they cannot talk to each other on the same frequency due to FCC regulations.
Managing and monitoring these protocols simultaneously can be troublesome, especially for emergency situations. Multiple devices may be in play relaying messages, instant response is crucial in dire situations. Icom has two solutions to fortify and enhance communications. The first one is Icom’s VE-PG4 gateway, it can interconnect these protocols to talk with each other.
The second solution is Icom’s powerful satellite two-way radios, the SAT100 and SAT100M. Icom partnered with Iridium and utilize their 66 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, it provides reliable communication with minimal delay compared to other satellite providers.
Satellite radios are perfect for when traditional communication infrastructure is unavailable. Satellite phones also exist as a backup solution, but with two-way radios you can instantly talk to other satellite radios in groups. No need to dial, wait for rings, or feel for vibrations. There’s also the RS-SAT100 to send text messages to others with your own smartphone.
Collaborating and relaying messages between different emergency operations is crucial. Icom’s VE-PG4 gateway can solve this by interconnecting various protocols to communicate across departments. With Icom’s satellite radios they provide a great backup solution to emergency communications. When pairing both the VE-PG4 and the satellite radios, you can add satellite communication to enhance your operations.
