Icom's D-STAR Submersible Handheld Radio Includes Built-In GPS and Micro SD Compatibility, Receives Positive Reviews
BELLEVUE, WA – Icom America, an industry-leading provider of amateur (ham) radio products, introduced the ID-31A portable this past winter. Since its
release, the 5W UHF D-STAR transceiver has received notable coverage—including editorial mentions in CQ Magazine and Monitoring Times. Most recently,
a comprehensive 3-page article was featured in the August 2012 issue of QST, the magazine for the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). The review by QST editor
Steve Ford, WB8IMY, has been republished on the ID-31A product page.
"The ID-31A is a complete package: it has the best of D-STAR as well
as analog FM," says Icom America Amateur Division Manager Ray Novak. “"The ID-31A is versatile and affordable choice for the amateur community."
The palm-sized ID-31A combines smart design with robust functionality. According to the latest review, the ID-31A is "a very flexible and useful
package." A simple directional keypad and a clear dot matrix LCD with backlit capability make this radio easy to operate—day or night. The ‘quick
menu’ interface streamlines access to general radio settings and a pre-loaded D-STAR directory. "The ID-31A’s navigation is one of the most
intuitive in the industry," says Novak. "With just a touch of a button, users instantly access to an all command menu system."
The ID-31A has a built-in GPS and accepts a Micro SD card up to 32GB (memory card not included). Users can update their location to other operators via D-PRS™
and obtain position data at consistent intervals–from one second to 60 seconds–depending on the setting. When used in conjunction with a memory card, users
can save GPS data logs containing latitude, longitude, course, speed and date, and then export to a PC. With a Micro SD card, users can also store recorded
incoming/outgoing calls as well as save memory channels, D-STAR repeater settings and personal options.
The ID-31A is a scanning receiver covering the frequency range of 400 – 470 MHz, with multiple scan options such as full scan, mode memory scan and bank link
scan. Priority watch checks for signals on a selected frequency every five seconds. Additional features include digital squelch functions, analog FM mode and
built-in CTCSS/DTCS encoder and decoder. Battery life is optimized with four power level settings: 5W, 2.5W, 1W and 0.1W. The supplied CD contains an installer
for CS-31 cloning software and an advanced D-STAR user guide.
